Treatments Details :
Treatments: I was
first informed about my disease in December 15, 2001 from a blood test
report when I went to a local doctor for treatment of fever. At that time
my WBC was 210,000. Then I went to India in 24th December; there I did
several blood test, bone marrow test and Philadelphia chromosome test at 'Thakurpukur
Cancer Center Welfare Home & Research Institute'. I was under treatment of
Dr. R. N. Ghosh (Hemato-Oncologist). He advised me to take interferon (Roferon
- A) thrice a week and 5 hydroxyurea capsules in a day. After the blood
test in January 2, 2002 when my WBC reduced, he advised to take 2 and 3
hydroxyurea capsules in alternate days. I started interferon from 1st
January 2002. Upto now (15th April, 2002) I have taken 45 interferon.
After the blood test in January 11, 2002 I came back to Bangladesh and
according to his advice I took 1 hydroxyurea capsule in a day for 16 days
and then stopped to take it. I did another blood test in January 19, 2002
in my country under Dr. A. B. M. Yunus (Associate professor of hematology
of BSMMU, Dhaka) and found my hemoglobin reduced to 8.5 gm/dl. According
to Dr. Yunus's advice I took three bags of blood and did another blood
test in January 28, 2002. I went India again in 7th February and did
another blood test in February 8, 2002 and it seemed that the WBC
increased to 16,300 per cmm. Then my doctor advised to take me 2
hydroxyurea capsules a day again which is still continuing. I went to
India 3rd time in 18th March and from a blood test in 20th March I got the
similar results. I shall further go to India in next June.
In the mean time I contact with 'Singapore University Hospital' and send
all of my blood test and bone marrow reports. After studying the reports
Dr Liu Te Chi, MRCP (UK), FRCPath (Hematology), Senior Consultant
Hematologist, Johns Hopkins - NUH, told me that by the current treatment I
can survive only 5 to 10 years and it is rarely possible to become fully
cure with this treatment. The only treatment that can make me fully cure
is bone marrow transplantation. The total costs for bone marrow
transplantation (including operation & hospitalization costs) is US$
80,000 to US$ 90,000.
Here one thing should be mention that I am taking interferon at Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. I had no other symptoms except weight loss when the
treatment was started. The weight is almost steady now.
Note:
:: I have no medical insurance.
:: My father is now in L.P.R and will retired from his job in next
September of this year and we have no other sources of earnings.
